Rationale:

This specification covers the construction of marine berths for officers, crew, and passengers. Berths shall be classified according to types: Type I; Type IA; Type II; Type IIA; Type III; and Type IIIA. Metal components shall be joined by welding. Spotweld depressions, on exposed surfaces, shall be spot filled and sanded. Side and end panels shall be suitably stiffened to prevent buckling or oil-canning. Sound deadening shall be vermin proof and applied to unstiffened areas where needed, and in thickness required, to sound deaden berth. The completed berth assembly with drawers installed, but without a mattress or box spring, shall satisfy the corresponding performance requirements.
