Standard Test Method for Applying External Loads and Deformations to Internal Replacement Pipe

Summary

1.1 This test method describes requirements and methods of testing for external loading, in both the lateral and axial directions, performed to evaluate the service life performance of internal replacement pipe (IRP) repair technologies installed in existing pipelines for renewal purposes.

1.2 The IRP technologies covered in this test method are intended for use in existing structurally sound or partially deteriorated metallic pipelines transporting a variety of materials including water (drinking, wastewater, etc.) and gas (natural, manufactured, mixed, etc.) where resistance to fluid penetration, ground movement, leaking joints, pinholes, and circumferential host pipe cracks is required.

1.3 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard.

1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

1.5 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

Significance and Use:

5.1 The intention of this standard is to provide a material-independent testing method to assess the ability of IRP products to sustain mechanically applied loading that is representative of the conditions an IRP is reasonably expected to experience during its service life. Products successfully tested under the procedures herein can be expected to meet performance objectives associated with externally applied loads. While the maximum allowable operating pressure (MAOP) targeted is 200 psig (1380 kPa), lower pressure systems can be accommodated.
