The document describes the preparation of ground and polished specimen, and their optical examination, of sintered oxide nuclear fuel tablets for the determination of their micro structure properties, for example pore structure, metallic and non-metallic inclusions, grain size, and oxid phase distribution. The method can be used for pure uranium dioxide as well as oxide mixtures such as UO2-Gd2O3.
