Excavations and trenches - Slopes, planking and strutting breadths of working spaces

Summary

This document applies to sloping and lined construction pits and trenches excavated by manual or mechanical methods and in which structures (e. g. cellars or multi-storey underground garages) in particular are erected, ducts (e. g. drains, district heating ducts or cable ducts) or lines (e. g. cables or pipes) are laid or in which soil explorations or archaeological excavations are conducted as well as to all other types of temporary excavations, such as starting and recovery shafts for example. The standard also applies to existing and new slopes where construction work is being conducted at the toe. It does not apply to graves in cemeteries. This standard specifies the rules according to which construction pits and trenches are to be dimensioned and constructed. For simples cases, specifications are given that, if observed, are not subject to structural analysis, e. g. slope angles, trench lining systems, standard designs for horizontal and vertical linings, (standard linings).
