Emission safety of combustible air fresheners - Methodology for the assessment of test results and application of recommended emission limits; German version EN 16739:2015

Summary

An air freshener is any product sold commercially with the intent of providing a means of enhancing the odour quality of air. In particular, air fresheners are designed to help consumers deal with indoor odour problems and the fragrances in these products help to maintain pleasant smells indoors. They also contribute to the overall sense of well-being. The use of air fresheners is increasing in the whole domestic environment and the market value in Europe is estimated about 2.400.000.000 EUR per year. While the chemical properties of air fresheners are addressed by EU regulations as REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals) and GPSD (General Product Safety Directive), the use of combustible air fresheners needs to be evaluated with appropriate and standardized test methods which enable an accurate assessment of the level of emission for certain chemicals during their use. Currently, there are no validated test methods for the emissions evaluation of combustible air fresheners. This european standard describes the methodology for the assessment of test results and the application of recommended emission limits.
