Information and documentation - International standard book numbering (ISBN) (ISO 2108:2005)
Summary
The document defines an International Standard Book Number (ISBN) for the unique identifikation of books and other publications, which may include: printed books and pamphlets, multi media publications, other similar media including educational films/videos and transparencies, books on cassettes, pc software, electronic publications, microform publications, braille publications, and maps. Not included are serial publications, music sound recordings and printed music, as they are covered by other identification systems. DIN ISO 2108 lays down the structure of the international standard book number (ISBN) and its placement on the publication. The new edition of DIN ISO 2108 increases the numbering capacity of the ISBN system from 10 to 13 digits. As of 1 January 2007 publishers and bookseller will be required to convert to the new 13-digit format of the ISBN.
