The performance requirements for portal monitor instruments are described in this standard. The requirements stated are based on instruments used in support of efforts associated with the United States Department of Homeland Security.

This standard provides the testing and evaluation criteria for installed radiation detection portal monitors that detect radioactive materials (without identification capabilities). These systems are used to provide monitoring of people, packages, containers, and vehicles to detect illicit radioactive material transportation.
Portal monitors are used for detection of photon- and neutron-emitting radioactive substances for the purposes of detection, interdiction, and prevention.
The purpose of this standard is to specify performance criteria and test methods used to evaluate installed radiation detection portal monitors for use in U.S Homeland Security.
