Signs and symbols used in writing mathematical text are defined. Special symbols peculiar to certain branches of mathematics, such as non-Euclidean Geometries, Abstract Algebras, Topology, and Mathematics of Finance, which are not ordinarily applied to the physical sciences and engineering, are not included. Symbols used in tensor analysis are also not included.

This standard provides a basic reference for mathematical signs and symbols. It is intended to be used by producers of technical documents and for the interpretation of such documents.
