Investigation of solids - Determination of organic, elemental and inorganic carbon content using temperature differentiation

Summary

This draft standard defines a method for the determination of organic carbon (TOC), elemental carbon (TOC) (like soft coal, hard coal, wood charcoal, diesel exhaust particulates) and inorganic carbon (TIC) using dry combustion to convert carbon to carbon dioxide in an oxygen atmosphere. Measurement of CO2 can be performed by various methods such as infrared detection or CO2 sensors. The carbon fractions are differentiated using temperature gradients from 150 °C to 900 °C. The method is applicable to dry samples of soil, soil mixed with man-made substrates and certain wastes (ash from burning of household waste, slag from burning processes, foundry sand) with more than 1 g carbon per kg (0,1 %) (per carbon type contained in the sample).
