German standard methods for the examination of water, waste water and sludge - Sludge and sediments (group S) - Part 18: Determination of adsorbed organically bound halogens (AOX) (S 18)

Summary

This document specifies a method for the direct determination of adsorbed and trapped organically bound halogens (chlorine, bromine and iodine, expressed as chloride) in sludges and sediments, with more than 1 mg of these substances per kg of dry mass. The organic halogens are displaced from the sample by elution with an acidic solution. The eluted sludge will be burned in a combustion apparatus. The mass fraction of AOX is determined microcoulometrically and the result is expressed in mg / kg chlorine. If sludges and sediments contain only small mass fractions of readily volatile organically bound halogens, e. g. in sewage sludge, the total content of organically bound halogens is approximately covered by this method. If the extractable organically bound halogens are to be detected, these have to be determined according to DIN 38414-17.
