Summary

The standard specifies general requirements for generic cabling systems, which are used in various environments: office, industrial environment, home environment, data centers etc. Apart from the cabling topology, the technical parameters for the transmission channels are specified, which may be realized using balanced copper cables or optical fibre cables. In addition, an environmental classification is introduced to characterize the mentioned environments by e. g. mechanical, climatic and chemical and electromagnetic parameters, to properly address the different performance level requirements for cabling components in these environments.

DIN EN 50173-1 (2003-06) and DIN EN 50173-1 Berichtigung 1 (2005-03) remain valid alongside this standard until 2010-05-01.*A transition period, as set out in DIN EN 50173-1 (2010-06) and DIN EN 50173-1 (2011-09), exists until 2012-09-01.
